POSITION SUMMARY:  Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Nurse Extern is responsible for the delivery of safe, efficient, quality patient/resident care through the use of the nursing process which consists of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.  Assists in planning and participates in patient/resident and family education.  Supervises and guides those who report to him or her and accepts responsibility for care given.  Maintains the standards for professional nursing and works in collaboration with all members of the Health Care Team, as well as with the patients/residents, families and visitors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

Education:       Enrolled and maintain continuous enrollment in the nursing program.  Present a letter to the Chief Nursing Officer verifying their enrollment status and acceptance in the Externship Program

Free from illegal use of drugs, and free from the use and effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.

Persons who have been found guilty by a court of law of abusing, neglecting or mistreating individuals in a health care related setting are ineligible for employment in this position.

Conduct self in a professional, courteous manner with co-workers, staff and the public in order to maintain a cooperative relationship among the healthcare teams.  Must adhere to a philosophy and culture of teamwork and cooperation at all times.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Works in the capacity of a student nurse under the direct supervision of an assigned registered nurse to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate quality patient care.

Gathers subjective and objective data through the performance of a nursing history and physical assessment as well as the gathering of information from the chart and other members of the Health Care Team.

Analyzes the data and identifies actual/potential problems.  Establishes priorities from the problem list that will direct patient care.

Establishes short- and long-term goals and established interventions to be used to meet the goals.

Implements the plan of care by either direct care or by delegation, based on the acuity of the patient, the functional or developmental age of the patient, and by the competencies exhibited by the nurse.

Evaluates patient/resident response to care provided and documents the care and response to care in a concise, legible manner using the format designated by departmental protocols or appropriately in the electronic medical record.

Develops a discharge plan upon admission and throughout hospitalization in collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and other Health Care Team Members.

Identifies learning needs of the patient and/or family, assess the ability of patients, family members to learn and learning readiness.  Provides educational materials and experiences that will meet the patient's family's educational, developmental, functional, and/or ethnic needs.

Provides an accurate account of patient status to others responsible for the patient's care to help ensure continuity of care.

Responds to changes in patient care assignments and delegates patient care safely and effectively.

Evaluates nursing practice and nursing environment and contributes to the development of high standards that assure quality care.

Performs nursing functions within the scope of competency identified.  Competency of the Nurse Extern is defined as those functions previously witnessed and signed on the student’s skill checklist, at least once, by a nursing instructor of Northwest College.

Medication administration of any type (including IV fluids) is not within the scope of competency of a Nurse Tech.

Takes responsibility and initiative to have skills checklist updated by instructors and reviewed with precepting registered nurse at the beginning of each shift.

Assures that the most recent, updated skills checklist is available on the nursing unit at all times (in competency book).

Attends staff meetings and in-services as required by the organization and by accrediting agencies.

Demonstrates an awareness of cost-effective patient/resident care delivery.

Actively participates in self-development by attending educational programs offered inside and outside the organization

Observes all Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations and facility policies and procedures.

Able to carry out the essential functions of this job (with or without reasonable accommodation) without posing specific, current risk of substantial harm to health and safety of self and others.

PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Essential functions are carried out in a variety of positions including standing, stooping, bending, squatting, lifting and/or sitting.  Virtually all positions require the ability to move freely through the building.
  • May have long periods of time standing.
  • Lift, carry, turn and manipulate items with a weight of 50 lbs. or more.
  • Exposure to infectious material.
  • Exposure to the stresses associated with an intimate, 24-hour care environment that delivers care and services to the disabled, cognitively impaired, and acutely ill and injured.
  • 10 to12-hour work shifts and routine on-call coverage.  Must be able to respond to the facility within 20 minutes while fulfilling on-call functions.
  • Periodic holiday coverage
