POSITION SUMMARY:

The work experience student is a position designed for high school students in their senior year who are seeking to understand the different employment opportunities in a healthcare setting.   The position is time specific and lasts for the two school semesters in the student’s senior year.  The position rotates through departments in the organization aiding staff with work related tasks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

Education:       Must be in senior year of high school and enrolled in the work experience course.  

Licensure:        None

Work Experience:       None  

Free from illegal use of drugs, and free from the use and effects of drugs and alcohol in the workplace.

Persons who have been found guilty by a court of law of abusing, neglecting or mistreating individuals in a health care related setting and/or are listed on the OIG exclusion database are ineligible for employment in this position.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Friendly Bedside manner
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Hospital

  • Remove meal trays from patient rooms, inform nurse or CNA what percentage of meal was eaten, return cart of dirty dishes to kitchen.
  • Refill waters for patients as needed – let nursing staff know how much water a patient has drunk
  • Answer call lights – find out what patient needs, help if you can or let nursing staff know asap of patient need/request
  • Stock blanket warmers, linens in bath house and bedside tables in ER
  • Restock IV area in ED
  • Check O2 tanks for >500 psi
  • Assist with checking expiration dates of supplies and removing expired supplies from the room.
  • Empty shred box at nurse’s station
  • Great public and assist with way find. Answer phones and transfer as appropriate
  • Sit with patients and talk to them
  • Assist DON with filing and other duties as requested

Clinic

  • Complete patient reminder calls
  • Rooming patients
  • Collecting Vitals
  • Cleaning exam rooms
  • Transporting patients to lab or radiology
  • Stocking exam rooms
  • Assist MA, Providers, or Director of Ancillary services with other duties as requested

Radiology

  • Reschedule patients for imaging exams and update department calendars.
  • Call patients to provide exam preparation instructions.
  • Escort and transport patients safely to and from exam rooms and other units.
  • Assist technologists with patient positioning.
  • Burn imaging studies to CD/DVD for patients and providers.
  • Clean and restock exam rooms and supplies.
  • Support staff during high patient volumes.

Complete facility training requirements as assigned.

Adhere to all facility policies and procedures, compliance program, Federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
